Wow, what a blatant rip-off of my idea. It's a good thing he turned comments off on this article or I'd rip him a new one.
EDIT: Woops, seems I forgot to read the date on the article. Looks like this was an original idea, so I retract my previous statement.

EDIT again: I priced out my Sharuum list at the site he used, CoolStuffInc, and they were generally more expensive than every other site (about $10 more than the next highest site, StarCity). As an example, the total amount I "spent" on my 15 non-basic lands was $9.90 on that site, compared to $8.25 on ChannelFireball and StarCity, and only $6.40 on Troll & Toad.

@this guy's deck: It's not a bad start, but it could definitely be better, even for a budget list under $50 (Woolly Thoctar?!? Oakgnarl Warrior?). I suppose if someone is completely new to the format AND the game itself, they might not know how to build a good budget list, but this one definitely has some rough spots.

Surprisingly google doesn't have a lot more $50 edh ideas, so glad our crew is rocking a fairly original concept. I'd say it's been going well so far too as both Travis's Sharuum and my Sedris deck have been more than playable.

I'd like to see others of our group get theres going though, I know Andrew was finishing up Kraj, Ryan's working on Mayael, and it sounds like Zach has a brew in the mix.

lol oddly enough I didn't see your post til now, but Travis reminded me about the $50 deck challenge and I happened to design one last Friday. Once the Troll order comes in, Hanna will join the fun. The deck will need some tuning though, it's designed with just some thoughts to be fun and interesting at the moment, no promises on being competitive, but looking forward to seeing it in action

That's the whole point of this variation on the format. It isn't supposed to cast a consistent turn 2 Rofellos, or win by Time Stretching into insanity, or even cast multiple Eldrazis. It's just supposed to be able to hold its own and demonstrate that you don't need to drop a grand on tons of expensive old cards to effectively play this format, and that you can start with very little money invested and work your way up the competitive ladder.

Recently, it has come to my attention that there is some variance as to the "rules" of this budget format. I wanted to go over a couple of the rules that I've been adhering to when putting my budget decks together and see if they need to be adjusted.

- Basic lands don't count (anyone who has played this game long enough to know what EDH is should know how to get free basic lands). ***This one should not really need any negotiation.

- When evaluating prices, I try to use only one store/website at a time (currently using Troll & Toad, but it doesn't really matter which one). ***As long as it all comes from one person/dealer/store, it doesn't matter which one. eBay does not count, unless you buy from one specific eBay seller.

- Only near mint/mint, non-foil prices should be considered, except in the case of products that only come in foil versions (like the Premium Sliver deck). ***The reason I use this rule is that this is usually a subjective measurement. Some dealers will have different grading scales than others, and some won't necessarily have the same condition that others might have found at a different time. I'd be interested to hear what the rest of you think about this one.

- All prices have been rounded to the nearest 5 cents. ***This is mostly for my own laziness (it's easier to type 1 instead of 0.99 in a spreadsheet that auto-formats to currency values). I guess it doesn't really matter much...what do you guys think about this one?

- I try to use the lowest-priced single whenever possible. For example, a Duplicant from Mirrodin costs about $3, whereas an Archemeny version costs $2. ***This one also doesn't matter too much.

Please let me know what you guys think, as this could drastically affect the way we build our decks.

I think all those rules are fair, although I've been using slightly played prices on either troll and toad or starcity (depending on which site I build the deck on). They're almost always readily available, and the problem with switching at this point is that I have 2-3 actually built decks that were built at those prices meaning that I'd have to do a lot of editing work and dilute the decks a good deal.

Also, I think Sharuum has a lot more cards to work with than some of the other Generals, but alas even so I get where you're going with it.


As for different sites grading cards differently, I'd say as long as you're talking SP (slightly played) there's not much variance. I never go by MP (majorly played) prices on starcity.

I do like the rounding idea, I need to start doing that.

It's really not that hard to shave a few bucks off a list like this. You just have to be willing to try a few different things (which is the whole point of this format variation, if I remember right). For example, I took the Sedris list you posted (as of 05/03) and made the following changes:
- Removed Sundering Titan, Crystal Shard, Decree of Pain, Crumbling Necropolis, Tainted Isle, Tainted Peak, Vault of Whispers
- Added Teferi's Veil, Careful Study, Life's Finale, Crosis's Catacombs, Dreadship Reef, Grixis Panorama, Molten Slagheap.

These small changes saved a total of $7.45 using Troll & Toad near-mint prices only. I also had to cut all the artifact lands, Tainted lands, and Shards tri-lands from my list, but I still manage to fix all of my colors just fine, and the artifact lands are probably even more important to Sharuum than to Sedris.

So, although it might take a little work to re-do some of the prices, it is possible to still get under $50 without completely diluting things.

That being said, if this really is a big issue, maybe we should put it to a vote or something?

My vote/opinion:

- Basic lands don't count (yes of course)

- Only near (NEAR)mint, non-foil prices should be considered. (yes, although I'm not remaking my Hanna deck, which was constructed using many SP prices. This rule is legit since not everyone will have access to SP cards, whereas NM cards are much more available. However on that note, Travis mentioned one of the nice things about the budget decks is they are easy to foil out. Clearly yes, however then it wouldn't be a budget deck any more, as athe actual value would exceed $50. So are we stating a rule that you can put in foil versions of your cards and count them at non-foil value? I was proud to be able to fit a foil mana rock in my hanna deck counting it at the actual foil value.)

- All prices have been rounded to the nearest 5 cents. (neg, screw lazy and call me scrooge, but .99 vs 1.00 on 50 cards lets me upgrade 50 cents on whatever I want . But provided folks agree the limit on total deck price is 50-$51, then okay, rounding to the nearest 5 cents is no big deal since that extra $1 variation makes up for the savings.)

- I try to use the lowest-priced single whenever possible. For example, a Duplicant from Mirrodin costs about $3, whereas an Archemeny version costs $2. (yeah this seems like the obvious thing to do, though if your making a deck and you happen to have the Mirrodin version, IMHO you shouldn't have to buy the Archenemy version to put it in, just count it at the Archenemy price.)
