Extended is now Standard x 2:
After Scars of Mirrodin is released in the fall, the only sets allowed in Extended is Lorwyn on.
Lorwyn.
Sword of the Meek banned, Hypergenesis banned, whatever, they're rotating by the time the format becomes relevant again.
But yeah, four years instead of seven in Extended.
** begin kneejerk rant **
I don't like this one bit, and mainly from a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" point of view. DDT needed to be nerfed, Hypergenesis is crazy-go-nuts with Eldrazi, so I don't mind the bannings. But jettisoning a large portion of a format that was otherwise healthy seems completely unnecessary.
I do not agree that the card pool of seven years of Magic is daunting. A large card pool indeed, but the more cards there are, the more strategies and the more influence creative minds have in shaping the format and somehow break cards like Bloodchief Ascension, Flagstones of Trokair, yes, even Dark Depths. With a few linear exceptions like Affinity and Faeries, most decks used cards from all over the seven year time span. Living End! With 14th pick Alara Block commons! Awesome! I'm not saying there won't be innovation, but if Standard-based decks are what they want in their Extended, it is what they're going to get.
It also leaves a gaping hole between Legacy and Extended, where Rav Duals are worthless and the vast majority of top-dollar rares become worthless after four years. I know very well that what could be $20 one day might be $5 post-rotation, but facing the prospect of only getting 4 seasons out of now $50 uber-rares reminds me of other dead CCGs where insatiable power creep made even the ultra-rares of older sets no longer worth the shiny paper they're printed on. Monetary issues aside, there are a ton of older cards that I loved seeing play in old Extended that I'll never see utilized outside of casual decks with my friends or EDH. I'll miss the opportunity to see some forgotten card abused just because R&D didn't double check the Future Sight spoiler.
** end kneejerk rant **
But I have no right to complain, the way things are going for me outside of Magic. This might be the last I play of competitive constructed Magic for a while. I thought I could grandfather in Zoo for another year, but that's not going to happen. I don't have the money for weekly drafts right now, let alone a decent Standard deck. And I mean not Jund. I knew it was going to happen anyway, just not in such a dramatic a fashion.
So yeah.
Gentlemen start your Faeries, there's a new game in town.
