Wow, they really went out of the way to neuter a lot of cards.
My initial reaction is this: - The shock-lands are legal, as are the fetches, so there is a lot of room for creativity and splashing extra colors. This seems good. - Most of the really popular strategies have been successfully neutered via the ban list. This also requires people to think just a little bit outside the box. This also seems good.
So, without digging too much into the details, I'm initially a fan of this new format. It allows for lots of creativity and doesn't just assume people will dig up all the old, worn-out ideas of the past. Kudos to Wizards for encouraging innovation.

The format will be largely dominated by fish/Zoo/Jund to start. Notice that they did not ban Aether Vial. I've also heard some talk about Dragonstorm being a contender as well as "the" combo deck.
This provides a decent alternative to those who didn't want to just play the "super standard" that extended has become. However, the prices are already nuts. Confidants are pushing $50 and shock lands with blue have been at $25-30 and climbing. I can see goyf sliding back into $75 range very quickly as well.

It's times like these that I'm glad I'm a pack rat. I haves: - at least 30 shock lands, still missing a couple Breeding Pools and Watery Graves. - all 20 fetches - 4 Bloodbraids - 4 Cryptics - 4 Aether Vials - 4 Dark Confidants - 4 Grove of the Burnwillows - 4 Wanderwine Hubs - 4 Secluded Glens - 3 foil Cryptic Commands (traded my 4th to SOMEONE's foil EDH deck) - 3 Lotus Cobras (I think Pat still has a 4th) - 3 Sword of Feast and Famine - 1 Sword of Fire and Ice (really hope I don't have to get more of these $50 bills) - 1 Batterskull - 18 core set duals (missing only a couple Rootbound Crags) - 16 WWK manlands (missing only Creeping Tar Pits) - 16 Scars dual lands (missing only Darkslick Shores) - 4 Reflecting Pools - 12 or more filter lands, including all 8 blue ones. - probably a bunch of other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head.
I don't have Goyfs, Thoughtseizes, or Vendilion Cliques, and I'm missing a couple of the blue shock lands.
I apologize if this sounds like a brag. It isn't...rather it is intended as a list of things I am more than willing to loan out in the interest of getting there at a PTQ or other such event. I would personally love to start brewing stuff up for what looks to be an exciting new format.

Groves are going to be key in a lot of decks. Many lists I've already seen run the Grove/Punishing Fire combo.
I think Bob is highly inflated right now. He's not even being run in the several lists I've seen and is weaker without top in the format. I blame the price jump there on him just being undervalued for so long. It's very likely to see a reprint soon also (in addition to the judge foil).
The shocklands will be reprinted at some point. The idea of modern is to provide a wide open format with a lower barrier to entry than Legacy currently has. They will obviously be staples of the format and I can see them coming back in the next year. The block after Innistrad is supposedly a return to Ravnica, which would give them a key opening to do so.

Oh no, my beautiful face! I guess my Tarmogoyf will hit you that much harder on my turn. Modern looks great, I'll be bringing my zoo or white weenies to every PTQ I can.

Grove of the Burnwillows is now pushing $20 on ebay.
What the F....
Folks, if you have big money modern cards...now is the time to consider selling. Confidants, Cliques, etc. If you're not attached to playsets, get them to ebay. My cliques are likely going up tomorrow night, unless anyone is dying to own a few.

Actually, I think I'll do that in the trade section.

Wouldn't it make more sense to hang onto them for at least a little while and see if the format actually continues to use them? I'm pretty sure I'll want to play this format, so this seems like a card I'll want to have in my possession.

I'm pretty sure I'll want to play this format, so this seems like a card I'll want to have in my possession. If you're planning on playing the format, I can see hanging on to them. I have no real desire to play competitive constructed anymore, nor do I have the time to go off and do PTQs like I used to. If I really want to play the format I will pick a deck I want to play and go about getting the cards (or getting again if I sold it off at the peak). Some of these prices are ridiculous though and it's just not realistic to believe they will stay this way. Bridge from Below at $20+? Dredge is totally unproven and steps were actually taken to nerf the archetype. Even when it was heavily played in standard and Legacy, bridge was never more than a $10 card. Prices are spiking way beyond where they should simply because people are in a rush to grab stuff that might be good in the format. There's a huge bubble growing right now on these prices that will burst eventually, probably right after the PT that's using Modern for the first time. It's also important to note that many of the format staples stand a very good chance of being reprinted eventually, which will force values way back down. Bridge from below seems like a perfect fit for a graveyard themed block like Innistrad, as does goyf to some extent. There's no guarantee they will be in there, but it could happen. The same stands for just about any card from Future Sight that was printed as a "maybe someday" card. Grove was part of that cycle of five duals that included the filter lands, which showed up in Shadowmoor. Basically, if you want to play the format, keep your options open and not bother with picking up cards you might have sold...hang on to everything. If you want to cash in though, now is the time to do it.

The real question you should ask is do you want to go on a tropical vacation or not. Cuz that's what selling off a dozen cards at the moment will get you ;D
