A couple of years ago, Adrian Sullivan managed to make it to the Top 4 of an Extended field with this concoction:
magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck.asp?deck_id=509768
Recently, I've decided to try something very similar for the Modern world:
Creatures (4):
4 Dark Confidant
Enchantments (4):
4 Bloodchief Ascension
Artifacts (8):
4 Isochron Scepter
4 Psychogenic Probe
Instants (22):
3 Burst Lightning
2 Hide/Seek
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
3 Path to Exile
4 Punishing Fire
2 Terminate
Lands (22):
4 Arid Mesa
4 Marsh Flats
2 Blood Crypt
2 Godless Shrine
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Swamp
1 Mountain
1 Plains
4 Grove of the Burnwillows
2 Lavaclaw Reaches
Sideboard:
3 Blood Moon/Magus of the Moon
3 Dead/Gone
3 Engineered Explosives
3 Extirpate
2 Hide/Seek
1 of something else I can't remember
My first round of testing was against the most popular newcomer to the Modern world, and a deck that was definitely NOT present the last time this deck saw play: the 12-post deck.
Needless to say, I got smashed. In three matches, I went 0-3 and 2-6 in total games played.
My sideboarding was kinda messy, but I definitely added in Engineered Explosives, Hide/Seek, and Blood Moon. I don't recall exactly which burn spells I cut, but I think Path to Exile and Lightning Helix are the first two that should be gone, along with maybe one or two Punishing Fires (since the Groves will get shut off by Blood Moon).
My next plan is to try testing some land-haters in the board, swapping out the Punishing/Grove combo for either Tectonic Edge or Ghost Quarter. Hide/Seek is probably still good, as I should be able to nerf the lone Emrakul out of the deck. Not sure if Extirpate is worth bringing in to follow up on a nerf'd Post.
If this idea doesn't work, I'll have to try Thoughtseize.
More on this to follow.
