So, I hit up the midnight pre-release for Dragons Maze. Can you say a 7 round grind, 120 started and only ~30 were there for the end 9 hours later.
It seemed that there were two top deck archtypes: Guild pride and taste the rainbow. The guild pride decks had one color combination (usually something like R/W or R/B) and smashed you with consistency (and reasonable cards). They usually needed 20+ playables in the colors and might only splash one or two off guild color cards. The rainbow decks went 4-5 colors and while their mana was awkward to say the least, it allowed them to play every 3-5 drop card that was worth playing.
And while the mana was good, it really didn't hurt all that much to add a 4th or 5th color over playing 3 colors. If you were going to get mana screwed, you might as well do it while playing all the best cards you opened.
I ended up going 5-2. Guild choice was Simic and I got paired with Golgari (lots of +1/+1 counters!). Very interesting interplay between the two guilds.
