So, I played a DGR draft followed by a MM draft. I won some serious money, but it was thoroughly unenjoyable (other than beating people down and dispensing some instant karma which always gets me happy). But what I'm curious about is how you would respond to the shenanigans.
They allow us to sign up for multiple drafts at a time so they can fire faster with the expectation that you drop from one or the other when they fire. I was signed up for DGR and there were 2 other people signed up for MM when DGR fired.
The DGR draft went well and there was a kid about 13-16 that is being highly obnoxious at the draft table. One of the other players actually asked him to shut up
After the initial stage of draft followed by building a G/W Battalion - sort of a strange deck but I hit a bunch of white battalion with green pump and efficient creatures.
I meet my first round opponent. Sadly I get wrecked despite his not playing since Kamigawa block. After the game, I get to talking to him and his friend that are both re-entering. I found out the friend was also signed up for the MM draft.
Round two I get paired vs the kid. This kid is annoying. He is driving everyone at the table insane. His play is insanely sloppy (drawing a card before I signal the end of my turn and assuming because I attacked I'm finished). I pull the quiet pro demeanor and other than required interactions don't talk to him at all. To get away from him faster, I pull no punches and beat him down (on the battlefield). The match is over within 10 minutes, it's so lopsided and his play is so bad.
Then they call for the MM draft. I pay for MM and plan to cede my last match. The friend of my 1st round opponent wants to finish him game for round 2 and then will drop and play MM. The others in the MM draft pod start heckling the guy because he's holding up their MM draft. In response, the guy drops from MM draft. We now have 7 for MM
the MM pod eventually finds an 8th from the Standard tournament still going on (sigh) but is being sponsored by another guy in the MM draft. During the MM draft, there is infinite table talk by a few people. Even more blatant, the guy that sponsored another play ends up sitting next to each other so the sponsor ends up looking at the other guy's deck while we are picking (and even picking cards for the guy he's sponsored). Additionally two people get into an argument about gay marriage.
We build for MM and I drafted an insane Faeries deck. It is awesome with 3x Dreamspoiler Witches, 2x Peppersmoke, 2 x Latchkey Sprite, Scion of Oona, Spellsputter Sprite, Redcap, a few other awesome creatures, and infinite blue instant draw. Playing the deck, I have to say that I enjoyed having multiple Dreamspoiler Witches out and then chaining multiple Peer Through the Depths to melt the opposing team
Round 1 I play the guy who is sponsoring another play who is playing W/B Rebels. I hit turn 4 Dreamspoiler Witches every game. They can't contain the -1/-1 menace and I win quickly with smaller flyers.
We go over to the guy getting sponsored who is playing Affinity vs G/W gigantic creatures. The board is stalemated but the Affinity guy is getting an Esperzoa trigger each turn with Faerie Machinists and Sanctum Gargoyles in play. This is game 2 where Affinity took game 1. Then they call round for Standard and the guy has to go play Standard. Instead of letting the sponsor play for the guy going to play standard, the G/W gigantic creatures player requires a concession for the match (there are also other matches going on for the MM draft so we aren't waiting on them yet). The Standard player grudgingly gives the resignation yet the opponent and the Sponsor agree to play for fun. In the end, Affinity grinds out the win (which would be for the match).
I then get paired up vs the opponent playing G/W big stuff. Since I watched the previous game, I know the guy has multiple Penumbra Spiders. Game one he gets a spider and I barely eke it out by drawing enough instants to kill the spider and it's spawn. Game two he Mouldervine Cloaks a Saltfield Recluse and is hitting for 4 a turn. I return the beats with a Dreamspoiler Witch and Scion of Oona. After some back and forth where I kill a Finks with instants (go team!), he drops Penumbra Spider.
During my turn I kill it with a Slaughter Pact during combat after it blocks. He forgets the trigger for the 2/4 token, starts his turn, untaps, draws a card, then realizes he should get the token. My only response is "Missed Trigger." I pulled the dick move because 1) it's modern Masters draft, this isn't casual with friends and nothing major on the line and 2) he was a dick earlier in the night and karma is a bitch. Without a flying blocker, I destroy his life total by doing 8 damage a turn with counterspell backup to stop his topdecks.
Ended up drawing the finals for 5 packs of MM. The good stuff I pulled from the MM draft was both swords (one during the drafting and one in the 5 packs), foil Aether Vial, Knight of the Reliquary, and an Engineered Explosives (plus smaller stuff).
