Against my better judgment, I'm thinking about getting back into legacy. Mainly because Misty appears to have semi-consistent Saturday event I can hit a couple times a month. Is anyone interested in testing/playing the format? I realize it can be a bit expensive, but it's always something you can build up to. It also has the benefit of never rotating. There was actually a pretty good article on SCG recently about entering the format on a "budget" www.starcitygames.com/magic/legacy/23338_Eternal_Europe_Entering_Legacy_For_500_Or_Less.html

I'd be interested, and I think I have enough of an initial investment in the format that it wouldn't force me to break the bank. What were you thinking about playing?
As for testing and getting used to the format, I think Workstation would be a decent place to start.

I'm building UW Blade. I had to pick up a few minor things for it, but I already have the more expensive parts in my collection.
I absolutely hate playing on Workstation. 99% of the games I remember were in no way fun or valuable for testing. I'm all for playing against people I know but not randoms. I'll probably do what I did a lot of for states when I couldn't get out to meet people, which was using Cockatrice to throw decks against a Gauntlet.
What would you be interested in building?

Yeah, that's pretty much the norm for Workstation. If I'm playing against someone I know, it's really nice because you can build and test a lot of decks rather quickly and you don't need to buy online cards for it or anything. I wasn't expecting to get on there and play against randoms.
Honestly, I'm not quite sure where to start. I think I have about half of the format staples, but they're all pretty random, and I don't know if I have enough to make a full deck. The two choices that stuck out for me were Merfolk and WX Blade. Maybe I should post a list of all the Legacy stuff I have and y'all can tell me what I should go for...

Do you have Forces and Wastelands? Those are both pretty key in those decks. Honestly, almost anything with a heavy blue component is going to want a set of FoW in there.

From memory, I think I have the following "Legacy staples": - 4 Force of Will - 3 Wasteland - 4 Dark Confidant - 2 Mox Diamond - 3 or 4 Engineered Explosives - 1 or 2 Chalice of the Void - 4 Extirpate - 1 judge foil Gaea's Cradle - 4 Stoneforge Mystic - 3 Sword of Feast and Famine - 1 Sword of Fire and Ice - 1 Crucible of Worlds (working on a second) - 1 Umezawa's Jitte - 3 Intuition - 4 Sensei's Divining Top - 3 Noble Hierarch - 4 Knight of the Reliquary - 4 Vengevine - 4 Grove of the Burnwillows - 4 Spell Snare - 4 Daze
Duals: - 2 or 3 Tundra - 1 Underground Sea - 1 Badlands - 0 Taiga - 1 Savannah - 1 Scrubland - 2 or 3 Bayou - 1 or 2 Tropical Island - 4 Volcanic Island - 1 Plateau - 4 Hallowed Fountain - 3 or 4 Watery Grave - 4 Blood Crypt - 2 Stomping Ground - 2 or 3 Temple Garden - 4 Godless Shrine - 3 or 4 Overgrown Tomb - 1 or 2 Breeding Pool - 4 Steam Vents - 4 Sacred Foundry
Fetches: - 2 Flooded Strand - 1 Polluted Delta - 1 Bloodstained Mire - 1 Wooded Foothills - 2 Windswept Heath - 3 Marsh Flats - 4 Verdant Catacombs - 4 Misty Rainforest - 4 Scalding Tarn - 4 Arid Mesa
I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting in there. A few cards I know I do NOT have: - Tarmogoyf - Vendilion Clique - Trinisphere - Jace, the Mind Sculptor - Elspeth, Knight-Errant - Mutavault

You could totally put together a decent Maverick deck with that pool. Either one of the straight GW or the GWR burning Maverick lists. Many of those do no run Goyf at all.

Yeah, at one point I've considered GW, UW, Naya, Bant, and even Esper versions of the Blade decks.
A lot of the lists that I'm looking at on StarCity's deck database are running full sets of either Tropical Island or Savannah, and either Flooded Strand or Windswept Heath. Some of them are also running Taigas, Maze of Ith, and/or Karakas. Could I play any of these lists with shock-lands instead of the duals, with Zendikar fetches instead of Onslaught fetches, or without the Maze/Karakas?

Put out a whole bunch of eBay bids for Karakas, Maze, Savannah, Tundra, Trop, Taiga, Windswept Heath, and Flooded Strand. They should all be over by Sunday night, so hopefully I'll win a couple more things towards either GW, UW, or Punishing Maverick.

Managed to trade my two Karn Liberated and a couple other bulk rares to none other than Adrian Sullivan for well-played copies of Wooded Foothills and Stomping Ground at the pre-release event (almost got my Karakas, but oh well). Should be very close to all of the lands necessary for the Punishing Maverick list.

Awesome. I'm trying to find some time this week to do some testing. I hope to be able to at least play at Misty next Saturday.
At the very least, it will be trial by fire for learning the format again.

I'd also like to try and find some time to test this week. Although I've seen a few matches online from various websites, I haven't actually played a game of Legacy IRL before, and I'd like to get some experience before I sit down and start playing for something significant.
Unfortunately, I'm booked until Friday after work with my mom's and GF's birthdays on the 1st and 2nd, respectively. I'm also starting a long and slow process of moving out of my apartment and into my girlfriend's condo. I think I'm going to be doing something related to moving on Saturday, and Sunday is the Super Bowl. I might be able to do something on Thursday or Friday night.
I'll try to proxy up my Punishing Maverick list at some point this week. If there are any decks out there that you would like to test against, let me know and I'll be happy to proxy them up as well. I'd really like to get some experience being the "bad guy" with a bunch of different decks so that I can get used to the format a little better.

Saturday events at Misty are not really for "something significant." I think it's like a $5 buy-in with a pack prize per player. Low stakes. Perfect for cutting your teeth on the format.
Also, congrats on the whole moving in thing.

Also, congrats on the whole moving in thing. Thanks, G! I found out when I got home last night that I'm NOT going to be in Iowa next Saturday the 11th, so I might be able to make my Legacy debut at Misty. I'm gonna go with the Punishing Maverick list to start out, since it seems like I have the most stuff for it. I'll just take a list off SCG or something and post the stuff I don't have in the next day or two.

My evening was well spent. Ended up going 3-1 with stock UW-blade.
Best part, the last of my three prize packs had a foil sorin. So yeah, worth the time.
